Bucharest Underground

20 03 2008

by Saviana Stanescu and Toma Enache

Bucharest Underground is an attempt to re-write in a modern manner the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, inserting the characters into the modern and cruel world of business and underground. A bilingual play in Romanian and English, it looks at the clash between two cultures and languages. As a result, Bucharest Underground looks at some of the stereotypes about Romania and Romanians – that they are homeless and high on drugs – and challenges them. The play approaches the love theme, through a soundscape which links opera and radio via the realm of surreal.
